The most important tax of the late Anglo-Saxon period was the geld, a land tax first regularly collected in 1012 to pay for mercenaries. In the past taxes were also collected by tax farmers and shire sheriffs.  They would have needed a pouch to carry all that extra coinage they gathered.  This type of pouch would have been ideal due to the fact that it can hold twice as many coins and flips over one’s belt.
